MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDY OF AIR-QUALITY WITH EMPHASIS INDOORS

Abstract: 

The Main concept of this project is to implement a pilot study on Air Quality (AQ) and especially Indoor AQ (IAQ) in 3 target investigation areas in Greece.

The main objective is to study in a global manner the health burden due to various types of possible carcinogenic agents of the human living environment, through measurements and modelling. The study will encompass n-APs, a-APs, b-γ and b-EMR. The proposed n-APs are R and RP all considered as class-A carcinogens (WHO, 2000) and as the main natural source of human exposure to radiation, accounting as much as half of the total equivalent dose due to all sources (USEPA, 1999; UNSCEAR 2006). The proposed a-APs are CH4, CO, H2S, SO2, HCN, NH3, NO, NO2, Ο3, benzole, tolouole and xylene all being investigated as possible causes of cancer, especially at high levels. Indoor and outdoor measurements are planned that will be utilised as feed-back for modelling. The study is believed to contribute to risk minimisation.

Other objectives are:

  1. Data collection in 3 target regions.
  2. Development of simulations for distribution of n-APs and a-APs based on literature, existing data and measurements.
  3. Exposure and risk analysis.
  4. Growth of collaboration between involved institutions.
  5. Enforcement of existing knowledge.

The Project's Actions will combine the preparation (instrumentation, information collection, know-how exchange, formulation of selection criteria) though combined use of measurements and simulations (Monte Carlo modelling, RISK, CONTAM, CONTAMWZ), scientific analysis, evaluation and administration.

The Expected Results will be enforcement of knowledge regarding indoor Air Pollutants (iAP), investigation and interpretation of correlation with constructional building elements, growth of existing collaboration and further research among involved institutions.
