GREECE FROM THE 2ND WORLD WAR TO THE COLD WAR. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND DOMESTIC DEVELOPMENTS

Abstract:

This research aims to generate a comprehensive study of the reciprocal influence between the Greek political scene and international aspirations of the East and West, the Great Powers and neighbouring states between the end of the Second World War and the first phase of the Cold War. Overall, research will be conducted in 17 countries.

The basic tools to be used in completion of the research will be the gathering of

  • a large volume of archive material, presently unknown or inaccessible,
  • bibliographical references in these countries' scholarship about Greece in the Cold War, and
  • press articles about bilateral relations with Greece.

All three major sources will become available for access and use by Greek scholars by their upload in an online database.

The proposed research will focus on international relations and the role played by all those countries which influenced, directly or indirectly, developments on the Greek political scene, as well as the attitude of Greek governments and political parties to these influences. This will be the first comprehensive attempt at an appraisal of international relations and the influence and role of foreign powers in Greek politics of this period since the opening up of important archives in eastern Europe and the former USSR from 1989-1991 to the present day. It will also be the first attempt at comparative analysis of the role of "˜West" and "˜East" in Greek politics in the period of the Cold War.

Research will focus on 17 countries, divided in three large groups, the USSR and its eastern European allies, the Balkan countries and the USA and the western European countries. The systematic retrieval, translation and classification of a huge quantity of archival material will lead to the creation of a metadata database of archival research in order to facilitate further research. Moreover, the synergy between senior and junior scholars will produce long-term results in the sustainability of the project in the future.
