METHODOLOGICAL EXPANSIONS OF THE DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION IN THE EVALUATION OF GREEK UNIVERSITIES

Abstract:

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is the leading technique for measuring the relative efficiency of decision making units on the basis of multiple inputs and outputs. In traditional DEA, the aggregation model assumed for synthesizing individual outputs and inputs has the form of a linear value function.

One research direction in this project (WP1) is the development of DEA models capable of incorporating non-linear value functions as aggregation models. Such a development will allow for a more accurate representation of the situation where for particular outputs their marginal value diminishes as the output increases, an issue that is overlooked in traditional DEA.

A second research direction (WP2) is the further investigation of DEA models with imprecise data and their application in the context of University assessment.

WP3 refers to the development of a web-based information system that will facilitate and support collaborative work of all those involved in the University assessment process.

Additionally, a research direction (WP4) is to evaluate the comparative performance of the Economics and Business Administration departments across Greek Universities using conventional and value judgment DEA.

Another important research direction is the evaluation of the teaching by the students of the relative departments (WP5 and WP6). The evaluation of the Economics and Business Administration Departments in the Greek Universities will be able to identify strength and weaknesses among them.

However, an equal important dimension of this internal evaluation will be the comparative assessment of Greek Departments relative to the European ones. This is the purpose of WP7 which will be based on the methodology developed under WP5 to provide this comparative evaluation. The outcomes of this WP would be a detailed database of all academic publications and research programs run in all European Departments and two detailed reports on the evaluation of European Universities.
