DEVELOPMENT OF IT AND MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS, FOR IMPROVING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF PESTICIDE BASED APPROACHES TO CONTROL AGRICULTURAL PESTS OF MAJOR ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE IN GREECE

Abstract: 

Background: Pesticides are widely employed to control major pests in Greece. However, insecticide usage programs run almost blind, because of the difficulty of measuring critical parameters and the lack of communication networks. Key information regarding pesticide resistance is hard to obtain and/or come in too late to impact operational decisions.

Aim: We will develop an Ontology- and GIS - based software for the generation of a user friendly database to accommodate pesticide resistance data of major agricultural pests in Greece with emphasis at the operationally crucial local scale. Expansions (pests and geographical regions) and/or links with existing international systems are envisaged in the medium term. Improved molecular tools, for the early detection of pesticide resistance in the major crop pests will be also developed, and they will be applied, alongside existing tools and protocols.

Workpackages:

  1. Development of an Ontology- and GIS- based Pesticide Resistance database (GR-RBase).
  2. Submission of pest population and resistance related data from the literature.
  3. Development of molecular diagnostic tools for pesticide resistance monitoring in major pests of greek agriculture.
  4. Application of existing and novel diagnostics for recording current status of resistance in major pests.
  5. Training actions-workshops for disseminating database and interpreting data at the local scale.
  6. Project Management.

The systematic deposition of pesticide resistance data, will allow direct comparisons across regions and over the years, in relation to management strategies. Information will help to shape operational decisions at the local scale, and support decisions on the sustainable use of pesticides, with a significant impact to the local economy. In line to the specific call (networks within country), a consortium of highly qualified experts in their specific subjects has been assembled, to undertake the tasks of the project.
