THE BLACK SEA AND ITS PORT-CITIES FROM THE 18TH TO THE 20TH CENTURY. DEVELOPMENT, CONVERGENCE AND LINKAGES WITH THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

Abstract:

From the 18th to the early 20th century the Black Sea had been transformed to an international market with global linkages. The different political entities and particularly the dominance of the USSR, combined with the different languages have meant deficient communication in historical studies and almost impossible access to the region's historical archives for non-nationals.

The aim of the project is to study the history of the economic and social develοpment of 20 Black Sea port-cities (late 18th - early 20th centuries) and their integration in the global market. The region became world's leading grain-exporting area and triggered development and convergence of regional markets in the global economy. The project will bring advancement of the knowledge of the economic history of the Black Sea region and its interaction with the global economy. The essence of the project is international co-operation, the creation of working networks of communication with the Universities and Research Centres of Black Sea countries and the collective and organized academic opening in a region almost inaccessible to the independent researcher.

The project aims at the renewal of the methodological analytical tools and in the internationalization of Greek historical studies.
