BIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE FORCES THAT INFLUENCE THE LIFE OF PATHOGENS HAVING AS MISSION TO SURVIVE IN VARIOUS LIFESTYLES; BIOFILMS

Abstract: 

Background: Recent publications on the subject of biofilms applications in environmental technology point out that further basic research is necessary for better understanding and description of:

  • Biofilm growth in sewerage systems under aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic processes altering the characteristics of waste water,
  • Biofilm growth in fixed bed bioreactors for the sequestering of micropollutants and heavy metals from industrial waste waters.

Aim: This project aims to contribute to the better understanding and description of processes and mathematical modeling of the interactions between biofilms and pollutants in sewerage and bioreactor systems. Set up and monitoring of both sewerage and bioreactor systems will allow the determination of main parameters controlling biofilms growth and biofilms pollutants interactions. These parameters will serve as input in mathematical models: (a) describing sewerage systems and (b) fixed bed bioreactors. The models will be optimized and adapted to simulate the main processes.

Workpackages: The project is organized in five work packages which will be carried out by three main research groups.

Expected results: Mathematical model on diffusion - biochemical processes applicable in a broader range of redox conditions. Two dimensions (2D) mathematical model of dynamic growth of multiple species biofilms in sewerage systems.

Experimental determination of the factors affecting the growth of filamentous bacteria in sewerage systems. Process optimization and mathematical modeling of fixed bed biofilm reactors for the removal of micropollutants (heavy metals) from industrial waste waters.
