INTEGRATED GEOINFORMATICS TECHNOLOGIES FOR TIME-LAPSE MONITORING OF LAND POLLUTION FROM THE DISPOSAL OF OLIVE-OIL MILLS WASTES

Abstract: 

The olive-oil industry is one of the most important sectors of agricultural production in Greece, which is the third in olive-oil production country worldwide. It is commonly accepted that the quality of the Greek olive oil is the best between the others olive oil producing countries. On the other hand, wastes from olive-oil mills constitute an important pollution problem in olive-growing areas but also an important issue to be resolved for the agricultural industry. The problem becomes greater due to the absence of a common policy among the olive-growing countries to ensure the environmental quality.

Until today, several scientific projects (such as PROSODOL (LIFE07 ENV/GR/000280)) have been funded by EU and national sources for studying and manage the wastes from olive-oil mills. However, all the funded research projects in the last 10th years focused mainly on the treatment of mills' wastes and the possibility of their economic and environmental exploitation.

The aim of this research deviates considerable from the above projects and traditional approaches. It tries to address the pollution problem before its exposure. To achieve this, it proposes a suit of integrated methods and presents a 'œtool' through which the end-users (environmental authorities, Municipalities, etc.) without having the appropriate scientific background can: 

  • recognize and identify waste disposal sites by using GIS and Remote Sensing (Phase 2, Working Package (WP) 3),
  • determine the present environmental condition (quality degradation) of the subsurface (Phase 3.1, 3.2 and 4, WP-4,5,6), successfully use an automated subsurface monitoring and warning system (Phase 3.3, WP-7) &
  • Produce quickly and reliably risk assessment models for the broader waste disposal sites helping the responsible authorities to take critical decisions on sustainable management of waste disposal sites (Phase 5, WP-8).
