STUDYING AND RESOLVING POWER QUALITY PROBLEMS IN SHIP ELECTRIC ENERGY SYSTEMS

Abstract: 

The proposed project deals with analyzing and resolving Power Quality (PQ) problems in electric energy systems of ships with extensive electrification. Within this framework, optimized configurations of critical subsystems are studied in depth: shaft generators, thrusters, pods, earthing grids, and protection against lightning. Finally, a central electric power management system is designed and tested, in a manner that all related PQ problems are monitored and mitigated. Noting the forthcoming complete ship electrification (concept of "œAll Electric Ship"), and the associated necessity for handling PQ issues, it is underlined that this the first time that a project focuses on studying all significant PQ problems met aboard.

The proposed research thus aims at a greener, safer, more reliable and more economic ship. The PQ problems investigated refer to all three distinct ship power sub-systems: (a) generation (b) distribution, and (c) loads.

The proposed research is a proper combination of analytical, computational and experimental studies. To this end, an inter-disciplinary research team is formed, involving researchers from the scientific areas of naval architecture, hydrodynamic engineering, marine engineering, electric grid and earthing grid engineering, electric machinery and power electronic engineering, and energy engineering.

Overall, the Main Research Team (MRT) comprises academics in 4 teams:

  1. Marine Technology (MT).
  2. Energy Saving (ES).
  3. Electro-Mechanical Energy Conversion (EMEC).
  4. Electric Overvoltage (EO), accompanied by an External Research Team (ERT).

A distinguished Visiting-Researcher-from-Abroad participates, too (Dr Athanassios (Sakis) Meliopoulos, Distinguished Professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA). The project is subdivided into 9 workpackages.
