STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF MEDICAL DATA USING STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING PROCEDURES (MRI/DTI/FMRI): ASSESSMENT OF CHANGES INDUCED BY BRAIN RADIOTHERAPY

Abstract: 

The scope of the present research is to investigate neurocognitive underlying mechanisms of cancer progress and treatment using functional and structural brain imaging.

Cancer remains a leading cause of death and treatment nowadays does not only focus on cure and life expectancy prolongation but also on patients' quality of life. While the use of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in certain types of cancer, has considerably increased life expectancy, it is questionable whether it could result in cognitive dysfunction. Functional neuroimaging contributes to the comprehension of the neuropathophysiology of the disease, which can lead to better presymptomatic diagnosis and treatment adaptation.

The aim of the proposed research is the multilevel combined study of data from conventional and advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging techniques, such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and functional MRI (fMRI) of healthy volunteers and cancer patients before and after brain radiotherapy.

The work is organized in six workpackages (WPx) with

  • WP1 and WP6 being project coordination and, œevaluation and dissemination of results respectively.
  • WP2 comprises the definition of specifications, requirements, imaging and clinical protocols.
  • All imaging data will be collected in WP3 entitled œimaging data collection- healthy subjects and patient's datasets creation from resting state fMRI, DTI, task-related BOLD fMRI.
  • The development of experimental protocols and methodology analysis will be performed in WP4 and œ
  • analysis of imaging and clinical data will be carried out in WP5.

The main expected results are 

  • the detection of potential anatomical and functional presymptomatic side-effects of prophylactic brain irradiation;
  • the assessment of radiotherapeutic treatment in relation to patient's clinical and neurocognitive state at various stages of both disease and therapy;
  • the dynamic readjustment of treatment based on the patients' specific needs improving life expectancy and quality.
