A HOLISTIC APPROACH FOR MANAGING VARIABILITY IN CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN NETWORKS

Abstract: 

Traditional supply chain management systems seem inadequate to cope with increased demand variability as orders move upstream the supply chain, mostly due to the lack of effective information flow leading to poor integration and low supply chain visibility. The most common symptom of this myopic approach is one the one hand, keeping excessive and superfluous stock in various supply chain nodes or, on the other hand, facing shortages and stock outs, mostly at the retailer and distributor levels.

The proposed research project aims to study the phenomenon of supply chain variability, identify the physical points of its creation, analyze its causes and evaluate its negative results on supply chain performance. In the midst of the financial turmoil, the issue of managing supply chain efficiency and performance becomes an imperative, especially for Greek SMEs, which are hindered by their inherent organizational, cultural, expertise and budget limitations. Towards that objective, the proposed project will study numerous operational, financial and environmental risks prohibiting the efficient supply chain operation and deteriorating its overall performance.

The main research result is the elaboration of detailed, holistic approach for managing supply chain variability under a risk management perspective. Based on a novel risk enhanced Supply Chain reference model, the research project will explore solutions to the problems of managing the variability of demand and support management decision making with a toolset of analytical quantitative and information technology models, well suited for the Greek SMEs, respecting their inherent constraints and limitations while at the same time making good use of their advantages propagated mostly by their flexible and agile nature. Finally, the proposed methodological roadmap and the supporting models and tools will be validated using real life data drawn from a sample of carefully selected Greek SMEs.
