The proposed research aims at exploring the problems inhibiting in the damage detection and conservation interventions assessment of cultural artifacts through the use of NDTs (Non Destructive Testing Techniques), in relation to advanced image analysis & processing methods as well as documentation standards.
The key objectives of the proposal are summarized as follows:
- Standardization of NDTs application methodologies
- Creation of a complete set of techniques and software tools for digital image analysis and processing of the NDTs output data
- Standardization of the documentation process of NDT methods in decay detection and conservation interventions assessment and expansion of the relevant standards
- Integrated Information Environment for the documentation (IIE) of NDT processes and its implementation model
The concept of the project to develop an IIE, through the interdisciplinary collaboration in three different research areas, which will cover the decay and conservation & restoration interventions assessment, the digital elaboration analysis and documentation of cultural artifacts by means of NDTs, constitutes a pioneering effort worldwide In the framework of the present proposed research work the three main research areas will be involved:
- The NDTs research area: decay detection and assessment of cultural artifacts, characterization/evaluation of materials and conservation-restoration interventions compatibility
- The Computer Science and Image Processing research area: adoption, adaption and development of new methods (in Image Processing) for the appropriate elaboration and representation of NDTs data
- The Information Science research area: extension of standards in order to include NDTs results documentation and to increase the interoperability among information exchange systems
