GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SELECTED AREAS IN CRETE USING GEOPHYSICAL AND GEOTECHNICAL METHODS

Abstract: 

Background: The proposed research project, combines geotechnical and geophysical methods and evaluates them as methods for the estimation of geotechnical parameters. Although the laboratory tests in the lab provide more accurate estimates of geotechnical parameters, they require costly and time consuming procedures for recovering samples and cores. On the other hand the geophysical methods are very useful for providing in situ estimates of the subsurface physical properties, which are not directly related to geotechnical parameters.

Aim: This project involves a pilot survey for the geotechnical characterization of the subsurface at selected sites of NNA (National Accelerometers Network) by employing geotechnical, geological and geophysical techniques. By correlating the data collected by the above mentioned techniques with existing data, this project aims to establish crossplots of the physico-mechanical parameters (laboratory/in situ tests) and the geophysical parameters for typical geologic formations and soils.

This project will focus on

  1. the influence of dynamic loads on geotechnical phenomena related to the static stress field variation,
  2. the estimation of the site effects in case of seismic loads and
  3. the proposal of normalized elastic spectra for construction planning and their comparison with the Greek Seismic Code (GSC2000) and the Eurocode (EC8).

Results: The present study will provide survey technologies based on the integration of geophysical and geotechnical methods as well as intensity and spectral characteristics of seismic movement concerning the areas of investigation. Additionally, it will update the normalized spectra of the existing EAK2000 and Eurocode EC8, which will lead to increased seismic safety through efficient and representative construction planning actions in the investigated sites.
