ALGORITHMS OF TODAY: SOCIAL NETWORKS, DATA STREAMING, RESOURCE ALLOCATION AND POWER MANAGEMENT IN COMMUNICATION AND COMPUTING SYSTEMS

Abstract: 

Undoubtedly, the theory of algorithms constitutes the basis of computer science and played a major role in establishing the use of computers in todays society. In the previous years, algorithms were developed to build large systems and applications in various contexts, such as cryptography, operations research, and biology. All the new scientific achievements that were obtained, brought to light new problems and challenges, and therefore a need to extend the theory of algorithms towards new directions. In the last years we have seen an increasing use of computing devices, such as portable devices, PCs, as well as data centers that have been developed to optimize processing and storage of information.

One more feature of modern technologies is the fact that we have highly networked systems, where connectivity is encountered across multiple layers. In the physical layer, we have computer networks, whereas in the application layer, we encounter connectivity among users in social networks, one of the most prominent applications of the WWW. In all these computing environments, functionality crucially depends on efficient management of available resources (energy, bandwidth, etc), as well as on efficient processing of massive datasets.

The aim of this project is to develop algorithms for fundamental problems that arise from the increasing needs of computation and communication. In particular, we will study four complementary research areas that require the development of new algorithmic techniques:

  1. Resource management in multi-fiber optical networks
  2. Models and diffusion methods for social networks
  3. Location, availability, and processing of massive data sets
  4. Energy management in computing environments.
