INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY IN PARTICIPATORY DECISION-MAKING

Abstract:

Incorporating sustainable development principles into European environmental policy is regarded as an overarching long-term goal of the European Union. Although several Sustainability Impact Assessment (SIA) techniques have been developed, further improvements may be conducted in order to incorporate sustainability in environmental decision-making processes.

The aim of the proposed project is to develop a methodological framework which will assist in the measurement of sustainability in areas with significant environmental degradation and will also provide the means of incorporating sustainability in participatory decision-making processes for environmental policy.

The project has 3 research objectives:

  • to identify sustainability indicators based on recent developments in environmental, economic and social sciences,
  • to explore methods of identifying the level of importance of these indicators through the participation of local stakeholders and
  • to create a methodological framework (INSPIRED) which will allow the use of sustainability indicators for the facilitation of participatory decision-making processes.

The project will be implemented through four Work Packages (WPs). WP1, WP2 and WP3 will focus on the identification and measurement of sustainability indicators while WP4 will focus on the utilization of sustainability indicators in decision-making processes through the creation of INSPIRED. In order to develop and test the methods of the project, the case study of the Asopos River area (Attiki, Greece) has been selected where significant environmental degradation is observed.

The main contributions of the project are focused on the further developments to SIA methodologies, the creation of new methods of incorporating sustainability indicators in decision-making processes and finally the assistance of bottom-up decision making due to the creation of the necessary framework in order for all stakeholders to participate in these procedures.
