LANDSLIDE VULNERABILITY MODEL

Abstract: 

The Landslide Vulnerability Model "LAVMO" aims at creating a persistently updated electronic platform which will help to monitor, predict and assess risks related with landslides. Data from Engineering Geology, Satellite Images and GPS Measurements will be fused in order to provide a comprehensive information representation.

LAVMO is a multidisciplinary project covering complementary research fields:

  • Engineering geology and Landslides.
  • Remote sensing and SAR interferometry.
  • Satellite geodesy using GPS.
  • Information fusion and modeling.

Landslides are recognized as natural hazards having a major social & economic impact and represent a significant risk for citizens as well as infrastructures. During the last years, a significant increase of landslide occurrences has been recorded globally as a result of increased urbanization and development, continued deforestation and extreme meteorological events. In Greek territory this exceeds the 20% of the totally recorded cases during the last fifteen years. Monitoring and acquiring in near-real time the dynamic kinetic situation of certain regions of high risk, using remote sensed data, is of paramount importance for public authorities dealing with natural hazards and large infrastructures.

The "œLandslide Vulnerability Model" will be a useful tool for prediction and assessment of risks related with landslides in the cases of urban planning, large public infrastructure development etc.

The objectives of the project are:

  • To develop a database with in situ measurements of landslide for Greece based on engineering geology but also satellite geodesy (GPS).
  • To develop a database of remote sensing data (SAR data) for regions of interest covering large time intervals.
  • The synergistic use of satellite and in situ measurements in order to understand and validate landslide mechanisms.
  • The design and validation of a Landslide Vulnerability Model based on data and decision fusion methods that will support decision makers.
