PHYSICAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF SEA LEVEL CHANGES ON THE ISLAND BEACHES OF THE AEGEAN ACHIPELAGO

Abstract: 

Beach erosion is a very significant environmental threat that is expected to get worse in the future, due to sea level rise and changes in the coastal hydrodynamic regimes and sediment supply. Erosion appears to be already alarming at the beaches of the Aegean Archipelago which form the pillar of the Greek "˜sun and sea" tourism industry and are particularly vulnerable due to their small size and limited sediment supply.

The objectives of the proposed ISLA project are to:

  • create a dynamic database of the spatial characteristics of all island beaches of the Aegean Archipelago on the basis of widely (web) available remote sensing information and web-GIS tools;
  • assess the range of their potential retreat under realistic scenarios of long- and/or short-term sea level rise using morphodynamic model ensembles;
  • develop/evaluate a low-cost optical system for monitoring beach morphodynamics;
  • assess the accuracy/sensitivity of remote sensing images of coastlines, through their comparison with detailed ground truth data;
  • study the dynamics of the terrestrial sediment supply at representative island beaches; and
  • assess the potential economic impacts of beach erosion and propose effective adaptation measures.

The work will be realized through 6 work packages:

  1. Project Coordination;
  2. Island Beach database;
  3. Morphodynamic Modeling;
  4. Development of an Autonomous Optical Monitoring System and Field Experiments;
  5. Assessment of the Potential Socio-economic Impacts of Pilot Beach Erosion; and
  6. Result Synthesis and Dissemination.

It is envisaged that the results of the study will provide an urgently needed inventory of the Aegean Archipelago beaches and a considered assessment of their physical/economic vulnerability; in addition, the ISLA project will improve our ability to model/monitor beach morphodynamics under changing climatic and human-induced conditions and assist in the development of effective management plans.
