SOFTWARE ENGINEERING RESEARCH PLATFORM

Abstract: 

The proposed project aims to support and expand research that is currently undertaken by separate Greek research institutes on software engineering and quality. To accomplish this, the project will build on an existing software for repository analysis (Alitheia Core) which originates from work already performed by members of the research team, in order to offer an open-access experimentation testbed.

The proposed research facility will combine data from

  • several Open Source project repositories,
  • a cloud based infrastructure for distributed data processing,
  • an API for external access to the data and
  • analysis tools repositories that will enable researchers to automate the running of large scale experiments.

The project will then use this infrastructure to conduct research on four distinct directions:

  1. Design defects identification, using software metrics to identify bad smells.
  2. Cost estimation, using the analogies based cost estimation method.
  3. Reliability estimation, using software design metrics.
  4. Developer productivity and development team coherence, using combined communication and development data.

The developed platform, the data and the experiment results will be offered with open access licenses at the end of the project.
