ESTIMATING THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON SEA LEVEL AND WAVE CLIMATE OF THE GREEK SEAS, COASTAL VULNERABILITY AND SAFETY OF COASTAL AND MARINE STRUCTURES

Abstract: 

The proposed research is an integrated study of the characteristics of the Greek seas considering climate change conditions, as well as of the climate change effects on coastal vulnerability and on the functionality and safety of marine and coastal structures.

The present research aims at analyzing and estimating the changes observed in the Greek marine climate, using data from modern regional and local models, for the time period 1961-2100. The estimated climate changes (wind, atmospheric pressure, temperature, rainfall) constitute the main input for the study of climate change effects on mean sea level, waves, storm surges, using two-dimensional storm surge and wave propagation models.

In addition, meteorological and marine extremes will be analyzed and climate change impacts on coastal vulnerability to flooding and erosion, as well as on the functionality and safety of marine and coastal structures will be estimated.

The proposed research comprises of six Work Packages:

  1. Climatic predictions with Regional Climate Models for the Greek seas,
  2. Simulation of wave height, storm surge and sea level accounting for climate change,
  3. Estimation of meteorological and marine extremes accounting for changing climate,
  4. Estimation of climate change effects on coastal vulnerability to flooding and erosion,
  5. Estimation of climate change effects on coastal and marine structures and
  6. Dissemination of results.

The project will provide an overall evaluation of the climate change effects on marine characteristics, on coastal areas, as well as on marine and coastal structures.

Its results will considerably contribute to the development of strategic plans for the sustainable development and management of coastal areas and to a more reliable design and upgrading of coastal structures in a changing climate.
