MULTIDISCIPLINARY NETWORK FOR THE STUDY OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Abstract:

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) constitutes a major health problem. For Greece, despite its aging population, data related to the extent of this problem and to health services available to patients are limited. As a result, there is lack of integrated care services and of inter-disciplinary approach in AD research.

Aim: The proposal aims at building a multidisciplinary group of clinicians/scientists (general practitioners, neurologists, psychiatrists, internists, geriatricians, radiologists, neuropsychologists and geneticists) to promote excellence in the care of AD patients and perform advanced translational research. Specific research aims include the development and validation of screening and diagnostic tools for AD and the identification of epidemiological and biological risk factors associated with the onset and progression of the disease.

Work-packages: This is a prospective practice-based study that will involve a culturally and genetically homogeneous cohort of 250 patients with AD, 250 patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment and 100 cognitively intact controls selected from a reference population of 40,000. These patients, identified through a network of primary health care services, will participate in epidemiological, neuropsychological, psychiatric and genetic studies to identify determinants of disease development and progression. Patient and control cohorts will be followed longitudinally over a two-year period.

Expected results:

  • At the clinical level: Development of a network (Center of Excellence at the University of Crete) of clinicians/scientists from different areas of expertise for providing comprehensive care to patients.
  • At the educational level: Development of educational programs for health care professionals.
  • At the research level: a) Development and validation of tools for early identification and diagnosis, b) Study of the epidemiological, clinical, biological and genetic factors that relate to the development and progression of AD.
