ATOMIC PHYSICS WITH ACCELERATORS: PROJECTILE ELECTRON SPECTROSCOPY AT THE NCSR DEMOKRITOS TANDEM ACCELERATOR

Abstract: 

The only existing ion accelerator in Greece, the 5.5MV TANDEM at the NCSR "Demokritos" in Athens has been used primarily for investigations centering around nuclear physics. Here, we propose to launch the new (for Greece) discipline of Atomic Physics with Accelerators, a strong field in the EU with important contributions to fusion, hot plasmas, astrophysics, accelerator technology, and basic atomic physics of ion-atom collision dynamics, structure and technology. By combining existing interdisciplinary atomic-collisions expertise of three leading Greek university groups, the strong support of a distinguished team of experts, and the high technical ion-beam know-how of the TANDEM group and its recently upgraded facility, we propose to utilize the TANDEM as a user facility to conduct collaborative experiments using state-of-the-art technology.

Work packages include:

  1. The construction of a new dedicated beam line,
  2. The implementation of new ion strippers for the production of intense highly charged ion beams at the TANDEM,
  3. The operation of specialized high-vacuum collision chambers and novel electron spectroscopy apparatus from the coordinator's lab in the US,
  4. Spectroscopic investigations of excitation mechanisms of ground-state and pre-excited (metastable) He-like ions by electron capture in collisions with gas targets combining novel techniques and specialized expertise unique to this initiative. Our results will lead to a more detailed understanding of capture to metastable states, a field of renewed interest with diverse and conflicting interpretations. The upgraded TANDEM accelerator and the availability of the specialized spectroscopy equipment, free of cost, offer a unique opportunity for establishing a novel, world-class research program in atomic collisions at minimal cost, while providing young researchers invaluable hands-on experience in new ESFRI technologies allowing them to successfully compete for funding and jobs world-wide.
