THESSALONIKI EYE STUDY: 10-YEAR INVIDENCE OF GLAUCOMA AND AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION

Abstract: 

BACKGROUND: The Thessaloniki Eye Study (1999-2005) is one of the largest, cross-sectional, population-based studies of chronic eye diseases in Europe. The original cohort consisted of 2,554 participants ?‰¥ 60 years old, randomly selected from the general population of Thessaloniki (participation rate 71%). The surviving cohort will be re-invited for an extensive ophthalmic examination, including laser imaging technologies, approximately 10 years after baseline. Blood samples will be collected. To date very few population-based incidence studies have been conducted worldwide.

OBJECTIVES: The primary objectives are to investigate the 10-year incidence of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and late age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and to determine the 10-year progression to a more severe stage of early AMD in the Thessaloniki Eye Study surviving cohort.

WORKPACKAGES (WP):

  1. Confirmation of contact details of participants (months 1-6).
  2. Development of dataform and electronic database (months 1-3).
  3. Pilot phase (months 4-6).
  4. Invitation of participants, clinical examination, completion of questionnaires (months 7-36).
  5. DNA extraction and storage (months 37-48).
  6. Quality control and grading of photos (months 7-42).
  7. Electronic data entry (months 37-42).
  8. Electronic database checking, statistical analysis on primary objectives (months 43-48).
  9. Statistical analyses on secondary objectives, manuscripts preparation (months 49-60).

EXPECTED RESULTS:

  • Determination of 10-year incidence of OAG and late AMD, and of progression to a more severe stage of early AMD,
  • identification of risk factors for incident OAG and late AMD, and for progressing to a more severe stage of early AMD,
  • development of a population-based biobank for future studies in genetic epidemiology,
  • evaluation of diagnostic performance of various screening methods for OAG and AMD,
  • development of normative databases for laser imaging technologies.
