HELLENIC NATIONAL NETWORK FOR SPACE WEATHER RESEARCH

Abstract: 

Advancing the current understanding of the Sun-Earth connection is a central challenge of contemporary space physics. The Sun incessantly and intermittently forces the terrestrial and other planetary magnetospheres both with its far-reaching magnetic fields and continuous plasma flows, known as the solar wind, and via sudden explosions (solar flares) related to expulsions of magnetic flux and plasma in the heliosphere, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This variable solar forcing is termed Space Weather, in analogy to terrestrial weather. Inclement (i.e., powered by solar eruptions) space weather conditions pose a serious safety threat to our space assets (e.g., satellites, astronauts) and to sensitive ground-based activities and infrastructure (e.g., power grids, polar flights, GPS-reliant tasks).

We have formed the Hellenic National Space Weather Research Network (HNSWR), encompassing the majority of Greek space physicists working in Greece and abroad, with an aim to understand, and ultimately help predict, adverse space-weather conditions. We are the only team proposing a full-fledged project on space weather "a problem with profound societal implications worldwide" that entails both basic space research and aspects of space technology. Notably, Greece is now a member of the European Space Agency (ESA) which requires the nation to become actively involved in space-related activities. Our proposal squarely addresses this need, as well.

In this project we will combine cutting-edge observations, data analysis, theory, modeling, and space instrumentation, encompassing the entire spectrum of space-weather progenitors, from the buildup and triggering of solar magnetic eruptions, to the propagation of the eruption ejecta in the inner heliosphere, to the dynamical response of Earth's magnetosphere, including involvement via direct participation to ESA's PROBA-3 mission and a rigorous training and educational program.
