SOCIAL NETWORK AWARE COGNITIVE RADIO NETWORKS

Abstract: 

Cognitive Radio Networking is a revolutionary technology that is expected to significantly influence the way that spectrum management will be performed in the future. Wireless devices will be able to auto-control the spectrum access on behalf of their users, through continuous measurements, communication, negotiations, cooperation and transactions with other devices.

Although Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) technology is still at an embryonic stage, there has recently been a coordinated effort to encourage research and development in this field both in Europe and in USA. Existing research has focused on the development of spectrum sensing and Medium Access Control (MAC), without any consideration for higher-layer "social" interactions between nodes. The interaction between CNRs and social networks, though, is expected to lead to breakthroughs in both fields.

The main thesis of this proposal is twofold:

  1. Efficient design of CRNs should account for higher-level social structures supported by the communication network(s).
  2. Measurements of network data traffic can be used to learn about social structures and interaction patterns at higher levels.

SoCoNet will focus on the interaction between CRNs and social structures present within the network. It will investigate the necessary methods for discovering and exploiting the social structure of subnetworks towards distributed spectrum sensing and resource management in CRNs.

Towards this goal, it will

  • develop theory and algorithms for dynamic social structure mining via traffic measurements performed in the communication network,
  • optimize CRNs through exploitation of social structure during resource allocation and
  • evaluate this approach through implementation of proposed methods and algorithms on experimental testbeds.
