INTERDISCIPLINARY INVESTIGATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF ROTAVIRUSES, BARTONELLA HENSELAE AND LEISHMANIA SP FROM CHILDREN AND ANIMAL HOSTS USING NOVEL TECHNOLOGIES: PUBLIC HEALTH IMPORTANCE

Abstract: 

Background: Clinical pediatric practice records suggest that Bartonella henselae, Leishmania infantum and Rotaviruses are three of the most common zoonotic agents affecting both children and adolescents; a result of human and animal interaction in both urban and rural areas. Data strongly suggest the strong relation between host genetics, genetic variation of the pathogens and the infection outcome. Therefore, a strain-specific investigation of immune response coupled with molecular characterization is expected to improve prevention measures and propose case specific therapeutic protocols.

Aim: To investigate the risk of human-animal transmission and identify preventive practices. To assess the strain-immunity relation and optimise the therapeutic approach.

Workpackages:

  1. Coordination and communication.
  2. Isolation and genotyping of Bartonella henselae, Leishmania infantum and Rotaviruses strains from children in Attiki Athens and Thessaly, estimation of their immune response and recording of treatment outcome.
  3. Isolation and genotyping of Bartonella henselae, Leishmania infantum and Rotaviruses strains from their animal hosts (dogs or cats) and estimation of their immune response and recording of treatment outcome.
  4. Identification of the level of molecular similarity between human and animal isolates.
  5. Epidemiological analysis of data and risk assessment.

Expected results:

  1. Improvement of diagnosis.
  2. Enrichment of the scientific background on the immunopathogenesis of the considered infections, in both humans and animals.
  3. Strain-specific approach to treatment optimization.
  4. Quantitative risk analysis to determine novel prevention/control measures for Public Health protection.
