CLOUD9: A MULTIDISCIPLINARY, HOLISTIC APPROACH TO INTERNET-SCALE CLOUD COMPUTING

Abstract: 

Cloud Computing Infrastructures (CCIs) promise to constitute a new technological catalyst for economic growth without costly investments and engagement of human resources for their management. Existing CCIs are limited in the "natural borders" of data centers in which they are deployed. Thus, the creation of CCIs breaking the narrow confines of datacenters, spreading to include multiple datacenters (multi-datacenter clouds), or even computers at the edge of the Internet (internet-scale Clouds), in a way that will provide the same high level abstractions and guarantees as centralized CCIs, is a formidable challenge.

To achieve this goal, CLOUD9 brings together 9 faculty members from 5 different universities with experience and skills in the areas of Distributed Software Systems and Management of Information, Database Systems, and Theoretical Information and Computer Science and Technology, in order to jointly research the arising issues.

Our efforts will first focus on the CCI architecture, developing (a) efficient and robust topologies and network overlays, (b) appropriate statistical measures and methods for computation (via distributed algorithms and structures) and resource monitoring, (c) efficient algorithms for resource allocation, and (d) composition of key systemic elements, such as distributed file systems, processing infrastructures, etc.

Regarding data management chores in CCIs, our efforts will focus on the design and implementation of (a) appropriate data models, and (b) algorithms and data structures for indexing, mapping, and distribution across CCI nodes. Moreover, we will focus on the consistency of data and on guarantees for the proper operation and use of metadata.

On this basis, we will finally focus on processing complex queries (from "classic" select-project-join queries to advanced queries, such as keyword and approximate queries), and develop techniques to optimize their performance in dynamic environments.
