FOUNDATIONS FOR PERSONALIZED COOPERATIVE INFORMATION ECOSYSTEMS

Abstract: 

Information ecosystems involve the coexistence of one or more databases and their surrounding applications for data entry and retrieval. For decades, both data and ecosystem management have failed to address significant, costly and labor-consuming challenges which involve

  • the departure from databases focusing on alphanumeric data only,
  • their inability to be integrated and provide transparent access and composition facilities for heterogeneous data,
  • their static querying nature, which is deprived of personal, context-aware or interactive characteristics,
  • the enforcement of DBMS operation over monolithic servers, and
  • the complete indifference to problems of evolution and adaptation over time.

The aim of the EICOS project is to provide the methodology, the theoretical and modeling foundations, as well as the algorithmic techniques and the necessary software architecture, which will facilitate the personalization, integration, and evolution management facilities in information ecosystems that operate over a decentralized infrastructure for a large variety of data types. The primary means for achieving the above is the organization of data in a dataspace that allows the integration of heterogeneous data and the transparent, personalized access to them by exploiting automatically extracted meta-information.

The project's workpackage structure:

  1. transparently incorporating non-traditional (streaming, semi-structured and spatiotemporal) data in an information ecosystem,
  2. dataspace architecture, structure and meta-information, mapping discovery and composition for transparent access,
  3. extracting, composing and exploiting user profiles for information personalization in terms of content, structure and presentation,
  4. distribution of the infrastructure and operation of an information ecosystem in cooperative peers that are easy to install, query and manage,
  5. provenance management, self-tuning, and evolution in information ecosystems.
