INVESTIGATION OF ORGANIC MICROPOLLUTANTS' FATE IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND STUDY OF THEIR BEHAVIOR DURING WASTEWATER DISPOSAL TO THE AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT

Abstract: 

The behavior of four different categories of synthetic organic micropollutants (perfluorinated compounds, endocrine disrupters, pharmaceuticals, benzotriazoles) will be investigated during wastewater and sludge treatment and their fate during wastewater disposal in the aquatic environment will be studied. These compounds are characterized as emerging contaminants and present significant interest due to their wide usage, their frequent detection in wastewater and their consequences to the aquatic organisms.

So far, there are few data (or even no data) for

  • their behavior in different wastewater treatment processes,
  • the role of different mechanisms affecting their fate in the aquatic environment and
  • the metabolites that are produced during wastewater treatment and disposal.

Based on the above, the proposed research will include the following steps:

  1. Development and optimization of analytical methodology for the determination of the target compounds and their metabolites in wastewater, sludge, sediment and surface water samples.
  2. Study of the fate of the target compounds during aerobic biological wastewater treatment and sludge anaerobic digestion, determination of the produced metabolites.
  3. Study of the fate of the target compounds during wastewater disinfection (chlorination, UV radiation), determination of the produced metabolites and estimation of wastewater toxicity before and after disinfection.
  4. Study of the fate of the target compounds during treated wastewater disposal to the aquatic environment, determination of the produced metabolites and estimation of the toxicity of the parent compounds and their metabolites.

For first time, proteomics techniques will be used for the detection of metabolites and metabolic pathways in microorganisms. The proposed research will be organized in seven (7) work packages.
