NATIONAL MORBIDITY AND RISK FACTORS SURVEY

Abstract:

Background: In Greece, as in other high-income countries, the main causes of death are cardiovascular diseases, malignant neoplasms, respiratory diseases and accidents.

The main risk factors of chronic diseases include elevated blood pressure and glucose levels, abnormal blood lipids, obesity, smoking and alcohol abuse, which are associated with modern life-style (unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, exposure to toxic environmental factors e.g. air pollution). To follow the population health status and to provide policy-makers with the necessary evidence to monitor health systems and adjust their policies, WHO suggests carrying national population-based health surveys. In Greece, several notable health surveys have been undertaken but they are restricted to specific regions or high risk groups.

Aim: This epidemiological cross-sectional study aims to describe morbidity, related risk factors and health care and preventive measures utilization patterns in a randomly selected sample of the Greek adults' population.

Study Design: A multistage probability sampling design will be used to select study population. Data will be derived through interviews, physical examinations, spirometry and blood samples' analyses. Monitoring data on air pollution will be included.

The study is composed of 9 workpackages:

  1. developing survey instruments (WP1);
  2. epidemiological design and statistical analysis (WP2);
  3. training (WP3);
  4. data collection by region (Sterea Hellas, Attica, Crete, South Aegean's islands; Peloponnese, West Greece, Epirus Ionian islands; Thessaly; Macedonia, Thrace, North Aegean's islands (WP4-WP7);
  5. future disease burden and public health needs' predictions (WP8);
  6. results dissemination (WP9).

Expected results: Data will provide nationwide and by region, gender, age-group and specific subpopulations estimates of morbidity patterns; risk factors prevalence; heart disease risk; extent of health care and preventive measures utilization; future disease burden and public health needs.
