COGNITIVE MECHANISMS IN THE PERCEPTION, REPRESENTATION AND ORGANIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE

Abstract: 

The proposal aims to develop cognitive science research, through the detailed investigation of three main areas: learning, perception, and language. In the area of learning, we systematically investigate the relationship between domain specific conceptual change processes in science and math and domain general Executive Function (EF) skills in order to determine the degree to which conceptual change and EF tasks share the same underlying mechanisms and brain networks in children and adults. In the area of perception, we investigate cognitive mechanisms underlying the temporal sequence of perceptual experiences in consciousness and the relationship between perception and cognition. In the area of language, we study lexical representation and processing in perception, focusing on the mental lexicon and the ability to understand language in adults and children with and without language impairments. A variety of emerging research paradigms and state of the art methodologies combining behavioural, computational, and brain imaging studies are used to answer fundamental theoretical questions about the way knowledge is represented and processed and about learning mechanisms in a variety of populations.

Additionally, the project has significant applied benefits like:

  • development of assessment tools for science and math competence, EF skills, and linguistic competence applicable to educators and clinicians,
  • introduction of new, innovative instructional interventions that can benefit school teaching, and
  • clinical interventions for neurological deficits related to consciousness, language, and music perception, for speech therapy and language assessment.

The project will benefit from an established graduate program in cognitive science at the University of Athens through active involvement of students and researchers, and will serve to refine expertise at the existing cognitive science laboratory and help to develop the field in Greece and internationally.
