FRIENDLY TO THE ENVIRONMENT BIOMASS PRODUCTION

Abstract: 

Greece and EU have to cover part of their energy needs by renewable energy resources. Biomass is the only source at the moment that can produce transportation fuels. Biomass production would cause a lot of changes in the present day agriculture. The removal of the whole crop and/or the crop residues for the second generation biofuels causes a lot of concern for adverse environmental effects.

The aim of the project is to develop practices that can make biomass production friendlier to the environment. During the project a lot of species already or potentially to be cultivated for biomass production will be tested.

Crop rotations that could keep the soil covered all over the year to protect it from erosion will be tested in field experiments. The effect to soil erosion will be tested in field experiments. The models for run off and soil loss will be verified for Greek conditions. Cover crops will be used to add soil organic matter to the biomass production cropping systems. Reduced and no-tillage systems will be tested in field experiments to assess the potential to reduce the effects of all crop and residues removal. Two, new technology no till machines will be imported and tested under Greek conditions. The lack of the proper machinery for no tillage did not make the up to date Greek experiments of no tillage conclusive. All practices under study will be evaluated for the economic, energetic and environmental effects to the farming systems. A dissemination plan for the new knowledge to reach farmers and their advisors, farm machinery manufacturers and investors for energy production from biomass will be carried out.

This includes web site, three one day conferences for farmers and their advisors, publications to farmer's magazines and peer reviewed journals. Management of the project will be carried out by the Genergal Assembly (3 meetings) and the Coordination committee (8 meetings).
