DISFER: DISTRIBUTED SENSOR SYSTEMS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Abstract:

The aim of this project is to revolutionize the capability of copying with emergency events (eg., earthquakes) that require urgent assessment of the situation, close coordination of efforts and timely response.

Our aim is

  • to develop an adaptive and scalable infrastructure and appropriate techniques which will allow monitoring, processing and analysis of heterogeneous data (text, audio, visual data) and real-time dissemination with the purpose of effectively dealing with emergencies, and
  • to support an interdisciplinary effort and create a forum that will bring together researchers in the areas of information technology, image processing, sensor systems and experts in science to identify the major challenges facing the design and use of such a system and to explore the technological innovations required to build a strong infrastructure to effectively address them.

More specifically, our work will develop along three major thrusts:

  1. Design and development of a distributed sensor system infrastructure, with emphasis on techniques for reducing energy consumption and real-time communication.
  2. Flexible and adaptive algorithms for in-network data analysis.
  3. Applications for (a) detecting presence of humans in emergency situations, (b) recording seismic response of buildings to check the structural integrity, and (c) exploiting mobility in data collection.

The realization of this vision is expected to facilitate emergency response sensor networks and contribute in the development of a strong curriculum in an interdisciplinary area and provide for the training of several graduate and undergraduate students in this important area.
