What constitutes Excellence?
Excellence concerns all Sciences and Technologies, any kind of research and teaching, without thematic priorities. Thus, for example, an internationally recognized research achievement, a pioneer experimental setup, an innovative theory and cases of innovative teaching that have excelled at national or international level could be indications of Excellence. A key criterion for a person or a team to be able to participate in the Excellence initiative is to have excelled and/or have been awarded a national or international award. Excellence can be either collective or individual: it can derive from either individual members of the academic community (faculty members, undergraduate and graduate students, staff, etc.), structures (workshops, fields, etc.) or research institutions (researchers).
Who is eligible to apply?
Applications may be submitted by members of the hellenic academia or research institutes in case they have been awarded a national or international award. There is no need for each individual member of a research team to apply separately. Only one application from a team representative is required.
Which period of time concerns each application?
Applications may include awards of the past five years. Each year, researchers, students and academics have the chance to apply again, presenting their new awards.
Are there any deadlines?
The process is open at any time. Interested parties have the opportunity to register their awards without a time limit. For the selection 2013 and the publication of the corresponding catalogue, the deadline is the 30th of September 2013.
What is the application process? (only for Greek Institutes)
First, you must create an account. Then you may complete an electronic form with information documenting possible awards and distinctions. For more details, visit the following link: http://excellence.minedu.gov.gr/help.
What are the benefits of applying to participate in the Excellence Initiative?
- compilation of cluster of excellence profiles, dissemination through the Excellence website, social media and press,
- participation in the annual catalogue of the excellence initiative containing a selection of excellence initiatives,
- participation in the annual conference of the excellence initiative and representation through other excellence networks,
- compilation of short videos for selected applicants, which will be broadcasted on the internet (http://www.youtube.com/aristeiaacadem1) on television, during the annual conference of the excellence initiative, in competitions and international events.
How will applicants be selected for further promotion?
Each educational / research institution is being informed about the registered awards and regularly reminded to select those which represent it.
Then, the National Council for Research and Technology (ESET) is being invited to prioritize submissions, based on the scope and importance of the award, and the application in general. The aim of this process is to select the applications which will receive wider promotion (participation to the annual conference, to international competitions and exhibitions, compilation of mini-documentary) and not to approve or reject them.
