The Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) was developed under the auspices of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) with a view to scientific recording and information analysis about the skills and competencies of the adult population.

The aim of this program is to specify and measure adult cognitive skills, in order to highlight their needs in training and education.

The Nationwide Survey of Adult Skills is the main key for the implementation of PIAAC goals in Greece.

Nationwide Survey of Adult Skills

The Nationwide Survey of Adult Skills assesses the extent to which the adultpopulation of the country has got the knowledge and the competencies which are necessary in order to respond to the requirements and challenges of modern times. PIAAC directly assesses cognitive skills in the areas of literacy, numeracy, and problem solving in technology-rich environments.

The surveyed population in Greece has covered all adult age range from 16 to 65, who live permanently in private households. The households participating in this research were randomly selected by a wider representative sample regions in Greece. The research was conducted through personal interviews, during which participants were asked to complete a questionnaire and a series of exercises.

The first round results from the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) were released on 8th October 2013. The research was conducted with the participation of 166.000 adults aged 16-65 from 24 countries. The second round results of PIAAC (2012-2016) with the participation of Greece and 8 other countries, will be announced by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 2016.
