EXCELLENT ACADEMIC TEACHING

According to the reasoning of the Committee issuing the award of "Excellence in Academic Teaching" by the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH), the concept of teaching excellence is much more than the ability for challenging and clearly focused teaching inside the academic amphitheatre. It encompasses all the activities which open new scientific horizons to the students and inspire them and guide them into adopting the scientific ethos as well as the selfless search for truth.

The selection of the award-winner is made by a Committee of Distinguished Professors who encompass a wide range of sciences representing almost all the Universities of the country. The award winning ceremony takes place in the Old Parliament of Greece and the title is awarded by the Greek President of Democracy.

The 19th award of "Excellence in Academic Teaching in memory of V. Xanthopoulos and St. Pneumatikos" was awarded to the Professor of Mathematics of the University of Crete and ex Dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering, Dr. Souzanna Papadopoulou, in 2009.

Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty [...] such as only the greatest art can show.”
(Bertrand Russell)
