SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF THORACIC AORTA DISEASES

Professor D. Dougenis is a distinguished scientist in the field of Cardiothoracic Surgery science, with a special contribution to the understanding and surgical treatment of diseases of the thoracic aorta.

He has written and published various articles in international scientific journals and books, he has participated in the organization of many Greek and international scientific conferences, while as an invited speaker, he has given lectures in various countries on the subject of Cardiothoracic surgery. He is president of the "Group of Cardiovascular Surgery" of the Hellenic Cardiological Society and co-editor in two international journals.

In 2011, the International Scientific Forum "World Scientist Forum International Awards" of IRPC awarded him the prize: "Eminent Scientist of the year 2011 in Cardiothoracic Surgery."

PROFESSOR D. DOUGENIS’ WORK

Professor Dimitrios Dougenis was born in Aegaleo city, Athens, in 1954. He graduated from Athens University School of Medicine in 1978. In 1985 he received the specialty of General Surgery in Greece and in 1990 he received the specialty of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Britain where he has worked as a registrar and senior registrar.

In 1999 he was appointed Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinic of the Medical School of the University of Patras, while in 2001 he was elected Professor in the subject of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. Also, he has been trained in England, Scotland and the USA. He was Director of the Section of Surgery in Patras Medical School (2005-2006). He became the National Delegate of the European Cardiothoracic Association (1998-2001) and is a member of many international and national scientific associations. In April 2008, he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, which together with the Harvard Medical School are the best Medical Schools of the World. This cooperation was based on the excellent overall picture of Patras University in research, clinical and teaching ability and experience of the members of the Medical School as well as on the high level of health services offered at the University Hospital of Patras.

The international Science Forum "World Scientist Fοrum International Awards" of IRPC (International Research Promotion Council) awarded the: "Eminent Scientist of the year 2011 in Cardiothoracic Surgery" prize to the Professor of Medicine, Dr. Dimitrios Dougenis, for his entire clinical and research work in the Cardiosurgery and Thoracic surgery science.

The International Research Promotion Council (IRPC), is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization, which has been founded by internationally respected scientists and researchers who specialise in the healthcare sector and includes among its aims, the annual awards to excellent scientists in the area of health.

This is the third time in 15 years, that the University of Patras and the University Hospital receive this specific distinction.
